The story, set in the not-to-distant future, combines "old style" sci-fi, with modern plot twists. In this story, Welch makes the plot very understandable, and does not over write things which is a very nice change. What he does do however, is describe places and events subtly and superbly. I almost felt as if I were there. I highly recommend this to any one interested in sci-fi. An excellent read.

A debut sci-fi novel from Birmingham author Islwyn Welch and the first of a trilogy. Set early in the not-too-distance future. Welch presents a chilling vision of a society which has crumbled.
Family is a forgotten word. Elite authorities, ruthless and all powerful, reside in the city, around which is a largely destroyed urban zone.
A group of rebels, 'Quizmasters' and a strange new meteorite are involved in an unforeseen chain of events making for a pacey and promising read, and a good foundation for things to come.

This was a book I had in my possession for a good while before I actually got around to reading. More fool me. This sci-fi book, went into great, but easily understood, detail of what could be around the corner in the not to distant future. As a non sci-fi reader, I have now been hooked and cannot wait for the sequel to continue the story of the Prokaryote. A great story and read.
